A young woman reflects on the emotional weight of setting boundaries with a parent who expects gratitude to outweigh personal freedom.
I 18F have a generally decent relationship with my mother. I've always loved her and appreciated her sacrifices. As background, my mom quit her job when i was born because she was too scared to put me in a daycare or have a babysitter. She then had my 2 sisters after me 2 years apart. We moved to a not so sad city when i was 4 so she never ended up going back to work.
She's tried to do different things with her engineering degree, but her resume gap was too big. She's done online businesses and things of that sort. Long story short she found a job but was too scared to leave us alone and stayed as a stay at home mom.
The problem is she constantly uses that as an excuse to control every part of my life. Constantly "look what i did for you that i regret".
I have to go where she wants me to go for college, go to a near by law school and stay home. No traveling, no going out, nothing. She expects me to stay at home till i get married to some random man, who is apparently gonna ask my dad for "my hand in marriage" before i even met him?????
I fear is becoming envious of me as i'm studying pre-law and i have 2 part time jobs. She wants to live through me so she can choose whatever she wants and act as my life is hers.
I've tried to reason with her, explain how i'm feeling, and tell her that i respect her and what she wants me to do but i am my own person and i have my own choices in life to make, but she's not having it, and she never have.
She's told me she wished i was never born numerous times.
Today we got into an argument because she tried to dictate every little thing about my graduation party last week, and yelled at me for not taking enough pictures with my family friends, but in reality we were having so much fun in the moment we forgot to take lots of pictures.
I got angry and told her that the entire time at the party she was dictating every little move i made, and i just wanted to go with the flow.
Our argument continued, and eventually i said you guys don't treat me like im my own person i have to follow every little decision you make for me and im not allowed to have my own opinions.
She began talking about all the sacrifices she's made, and i snapped and said it's not my fault you put urself in this position, you've had multiple opportunities to take and you missed out on them, i appreciate everything you have done but i cannot live the life you want me to over a decision i have no part in.
She became extremely angry and she's now throwing things around.
A mother and daughter struggle with growing tension as disagreements over independence and family expectations begin to reshape their relationship.
SleeplessPilot NTA Your mother sounds deranged. You have my sympathies.
nerd_is_a_verb Your mom is a child. Just move out as soon as possible. She's never going to come around because she doesn't want to change.
Eyelashestoolong NTA you're 100% right. She made her choices, she has to live with the consequences. You shouldn't get punished for her mistakes
Exotic_Gap_7267 You are not responsible for your mom's choices. I think its time you tried to set some boundaries
kmflushing Sorry. It's time to distance yourself and live your own life for yourself. Make your own decisions. NTA. Good luck.
StrangerCharacter53 NTA your mom isn't too old to work, either. She's just using you and your sisters as an excuse. Go, live your life and never let her guilt stop you.
A frustrated teenager reacts as a parent tries to control major life decisions, from college plans to personal milestones.
Big_Satisfaction_876 NTA she crashed her life and now she wants the keys to yours. Don't let her have them.
Ethyl Mertz NTA. Mom may benefit by seeing a therapist. It's not too late for her to make a new life for herself. I enrolled at the local community college when my kids graduated high school, got my degrees and have been working fulltime the last 12 years. If she gets to start focusing on herself, perhaps she will stop focusing on yours.
